Sewer talk

  • ready to engage on wastewater master plan prioritizing clear timelines for expansion and upgrades

  • focused on environmental impacts as capacity for growth is maintained

Although not the most glamorous subject to be centering an election on, sewer services and wastewater treatment are, in many ways, the reason we are all even voting for a municipal government in the first place. Incorporation was necessary to build and manage the sewer system that has unlocked a huge amount of growth in Sooke over the last 20 years. It is one of the most critical files for our everyday quality of life and there must be planning in place for its continued maintenance and further expansion.

Noah knows the environmental benefits of the sewer system and treatment plant are clear. Since its introduction, the reduction of fecal coliform levels in the basin and harbour have been significant. This is good for wildlife and allows greater opportunities for aquaculture. Additionally, Landowners who switch to from septic to sewer no longer need to worry about maintaining a system and gain additional usable space on their land.

In 2024 Sooke announced substantial completion of a $6.5 million Wastewater Treatment Plant Capacity Expansion Project. This expansion allows for only about 5 more years of growth capacity. In the coming year or two, the district will be updating the Wastewater Master Plan. Important considerations will be made for the impact of provincial rules around density and desired areas of expansion for the Sewer Specified Area (SSA).

Noah supports further expansion not only to maintain capacity for growth but also in a targeted way to reduce the potential environmental impact on the land and sea from the continued use of aged septic systems that may be failing. He hopes the Wastewater Master Plan will make it clear what areas are likely to expand and how soon.
